The acoustic EP that started it all, available online for the first time ever! The initial very small run of these CDs were only ever sold at gigs in late 2016 after the EP's release. Now, for the first time ever, a very limited run of special edition picture discs are available, to do full justice to Susan Omand's brilliant original artwork. The CD contains four tracks, and comes in a glossy cardboard sleeve that lists the full EP credits. Features the song 'Rattlebone Colour', the first of my songs to get airplay on the BBC and around the world.

1.
Well I hope you don't hear my bones rattling As I bob and weave and dodge and duck and dive I crave peace, it's peace I seek Under the eaves I plot a peaceful life I feel monochrome or black and white You're my colour, wash over me tonight And I hope you don't see my face reddening As I pick among the dry bones of my past I needed you, it's you I sought All my old issues seem so overwrought (chorus) Don't ever tell me, don't ever tell me, don't ever tell me I'm wasting my time (chorus) They said, hey Rattlebone, you got that troublesome blood (chorus)
2.
How did any of this come to pass? I feel like a child asking 'why?' to each question I'm cold like ceramics and glass Then I am burning in every region Wait, and I will stand and speak Wait, and I will stand I'll be singing I'll raise my game, I won't lose my way I'll raise my game How did any of this come to be? I see a thousand pictures but have no way to frame them I can't turn the tide within me I have all these natures but no way to tame them Wait, they want to hear my voice Wait, they want to hear me (chorus) I'm going to raise my game, bring it back to you Bring it to you... Pick your battles, pick your winners Wisely How are you at being prepared? Change the guard in my head like the world changes seasons Watch as my emotions flare Try as I might, there's no way to freeze them Wait, and I will rise up and shout Wait, and I will rise (chorus) I'm going to raise my game, bring it back to you Bring it to you
3.
Where did you go? Old friend, where did you drag your carcass? When they shut your favourite watering hole I heard you split up with your missus Then I heard you vanished on a boat Rumours abound, yeah rumours abound, rumours go round I keep my ear to the ground Old friend, did you have to sell your guitars? Or do you still play so loud the walls all shake? I heard you got yourself arrested Then I heard you died in an earthquake Rumours go round, yeah rumours go round, rumours abound I keep my ear to the ground And I don't know how you're living hand to mouth I don't know if you've been using your gifts I don't know how you're living hand to mouth Rumours go round, yeah rumours go round, rumours abound I keep my ear to the ground Old friend, I hear you're running for mayor of London And I hear you bagged an aristocrat I hear you're worth a cool million And I don't know just what to think about that Rumours abound, yeah rumours abound, rumours go round I keep my ear to the ground And I don't know how you're living hand to mouth I don't know if you've been using your gifts I don't know how you're living hand to mouth Rumours go round, yeah rumours go round, rumours abound I keep my ear to the ground
4.
I get a loose tongue in good company Said the man with the ruined knee Drinking more as I age Never wiser, never more sage But when I go out by the coast, I hear ghosts in the sea When I go out by the coast, I hear ghosts within me What am I to make of the man with the ruined knee? What am I to make of the man sitting next to me? He said, I left my wife on the church steps Fled the country to Marrakesh I lost the use of my knee When her family caught up with me When I go limping in the woods, I hear laughter in the trees When I go limping in the woods, I hear them laughing at me (chorus) He said you don't know the road 'til you're on it He said you don't know the road... He said, I was on a 'most wanted' list The FBI took a shot but missed There's a trick I learned after all these years It's always better to disappear But when I go out by the river, I hear whispers in the water When I go out by the river, I hear whispers What am I to make of the man with the ruined knee? What am I to make of the man sitting next to me? What am I to make of anyone? What am I to make of the setting sun?

about

An evocative and energetic 4-track acoustic EP, recorded, mixed and mastered at Momentum Studios, Plymouth, UK. Produced by Josiah Manning in optimum conditions and maximum comfort...

This was an EP long in the making. There are four songs here, but we worked hard to make sure that they each sound and feel very different. Some of these songs have been kicking around for many years in various forms, and some are more recent. Three of them were written on the zouk (that's the Greek bouzouki, btw) before I transposed them to guitar and they came alive that little bit more.

All these songs are regular additions to my live set, and as such they were all recorded live, and the vocal harmonies added later.
